In Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, 50-year-old Rebecca Ajoc has dedicated nearly three decades to vegetable farming. As a seasoned vegetable farmer, Rebecca grows a variety of crops including eggplant, bitter gourd, cucumber, okra, sponge gourd, cabbage, string beans, and squash. Her resilience and dedication have seen her through many challenges, from climate change to pest infestations, and even personal loss.
Rebecca’s farming journey took a significant leap when she learned about the Agricultural Credit Policy Council’s (ACPC) AgriNegosyo Loan Program.
“The program’s minimal fees, no collateral, and flexible terms made it perfect for me,” Rebecca explains. She first borrowed P130,000 pesos through Cantilan Bank, Incorporated and successfully repaid it. Motivated by this success, she took out a second loan of P250,000 pesos to buy fertilizers, insecticides, and pay her farm laborers.
“Every harvest, I make sure to set aside money for my loan payments. It’s about being disciplined and managing what you earn wisely,” Rebecca shares. Her approach to financial management has not only kept her on track with loan repayments but has also allowed her to steadily grow her farm.
As a widower, Rebecca finds deep pride in her work. “Being a woman farmer means I help feed my community and provide for my family. It’s something I am very proud of,” she says with a smile. Her produce reaches both wholesalers and retailers, ensuring fresh vegetables are available to many.
Rebecca’s advice to those considering a career in agriculture is simple yet profound: “Be brave, work hard, and endure. The rewards will come with every harvest.”
Looking ahead, Rebecca plans to continue expanding her farm. After paying off her second loan, she intends to borrow again to invest further in her farm’s growth. “I am thankful to ACPC and Cantilan Bank for their support. They have been instrumental in helping me achieve my dreams,” she expresses with gratitude.
Rebecca Ajoc’s story is one of hard work and perseverance. She proves that with determination and the right support, it’s possible to achieve great things.
